How to Replace BMW F20, F21, F22, F23, F87 Pre-LCI Interior Trim (Step-by-Step Guide)?

Upgrading your BMW’s interior is one of the easiest ways to refresh its look. Whether you own a BMW F20, F21, F22, F23, or F87 replacing the factory plastic or brushed aluminum trims with genuine Alcantara interior trim sets gives your cabin a premium, motorsport-inspired finish.
This quick guide explains exactly how to remove and replace your BMW 1- and 2-Series (pre-LCI) interior trim safely and efficiently.
Tools You’ll Need
Before you start, prepare these tools:
• Torx #20 screwdriver
• Plastic trim pry tool (nylon only – never metal)
• Soft cloth or towel (to protect surfaces)
Tip: Always work on a cool interior and cover adjacent panels to prevent scratches.
Step 1: Preparation
1. Park the car on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Turn off the ignition.
3. If you’ll be near electrical components, disconnect the battery.
4. Use a soft cloth to cover nearby panels and protect surfaces.

Step 2: Remove Dashboard Trim
1. Start on the passenger side — open the glovebox and locate the trim edge.

2. Use your plastic pry tool at the bottom edge and gently pry outward.
3. Work your way along the trim to release all retaining clips.

4. Once loose, lift the trim slightly upward and outward to remove it.
Important: Avoid forcing the clips — slow, even pressure works best.
Step 3: Detach Air Vents
The air vents are attached to the trim with seven tabs (four on one side, three on the other).
• Release the side with three tabs first using your fingers or the trim tool.

• Lift the vent out carefully and transfer it to your new Alcantara trim piece.
Step 4: Center Console / Radio Controller Surround
1. Insert the pry tool at the bottom of the center trim panel.

2. Gently pull outward and upward, releasing the clips as you go.

3. Gently remove the trim by slightly pulling it up and when all the clips are released pulling it towards the rear of the vehicle
4. Remove the seven Torx #20 screws securing the center trim or control module.

5. Swap the trim pieces and reinstall screws — tighten them gently (don’t over-torque).
Step 5: Door Panel Trim
1. Locate an insert on the bottom of the door handle trim. Ar starp prying from there.

2. Pry from the left and right side of the trim.

3. When reinstalling the trim align the locating tab or “L” bracket on your trim to the mounting point.

4. Snap the trim down into place from top to bottom.

5. If the trim doesn’t sit flush, realign before pressing fully.

Step 6: Reassembly
Reinstall everything in the reverse order:
• Secure air vents to your new Alcantara trim.
• Press each trim piece firmly along the clip points.
• Check that all clips are engaged and aligned.
